Rob: As a dad, am I more like a bear or a bunny?

Many cultures believe in spirit animals. Stories, books and movies often create animal characters with depth, personality and feeling. In most instances these animals take on at least some human traits. I believe the term is anthropomorphism.

However, while these anthropomorphic animals and spirit creatures exhibit some human characteristics, they also retain their animal natures. Cheetahs are still fast, lions are fierce and penguins are funny.

If I was going to anthropomorph myself as a father, what would I be?

Would I be a tiger? Sleek and silent. Independent, but ready to step in if trouble arises.

or

Would I be an eagle? Majestic and aloof. Dependable, but also willing to leave the nest to provide.

or

Would I be a bear? Rough and tumble. Fierce and protective of my young.

or

Would I be a bunny? Soft and cuddly. Warm, but cautious and risk adverse.
or

Perhaps I'm the kind of dad who, like the turtle, leaves his young to fend for themselves? Relying on nature and instinct to keep them safe.

or

Perhaps I'm the kind of father who, like the honey bee, creates a bustling safe haven for my young? An active hive where friends and family are always coming and going.

or

Perhaps I'm the kind of father who, like the sled dog, works as a key component of a team? Just one part of the core family unit that pulls everything along.

 or

Perhaps I'm the kind of father who, like the elephant, cherishes and nurtures my young? Retaining all those special memories forever.

I guess if I had to choose, I'd like to think I'm like the wolf: Fierce and protective, but with a softer, playful side too. A wolf who encourages development and teaches his young how to provide for themselves. A wolf who recognizes the power of his wolf-pack, but also realizes that someday his young will have to go off and start their own packs.

If you were suddenly able to anthropomorph and turn yourself into a parent animal, what would you be?

  1. Great question Rob! I love the idea of you as a wolf dad for the reasons you describled, it's the perfect answer. I think of myself as mama bear - don't mess with her cubs but she is loving & playful with her family :) #wineandboobs

    1. Thanks Cuddle Fairy. I think I must have started and stopped this post a dozen times and couldn't come up with the wolf until right at the end. I was originally thinking about being a papa bear.

  2. Oh my word, what a question. Of course I want to say I'd be some kind of fearless lion. In truth, probably a pigeon or something like that! #wineandboobs

  4. A fun question to pose, I think I can be bear or bunny depending on so many factors, as parents we are every animal at some stage to encourage and support our kids. #wine&boobs
